The Best Fishing Shops in Abu Dhabi

Want to go fishing in Abu Dhabi but don’t know where to get started? Then this is the guide for you.

Abu Dhabi is great for fishing! Below we uncover the best shops to get your fishing equipment, the best spots to try out your new fishing rod and how to get a fishing license. With our local knowledge we’ll get you set up and fishing in no time.

Abu Dhabi’s Best Fishing Shops

The capital’s best fishing stores are all clustered together on Razeen Street in the Tourist Club Area. This area is affectionately known as the ‘fishing district’ as there are plenty of fishing equipment stores there to meet your needs. There is paid street parking available or you can park in Abu Dhabi Mall and walk the 800 or so meters. There is a similar cluster of fishing stores in Musaffah, but we didn’t go there this time. Below we review some of our favorite stores from the ‘fishing district’ and also discuss some of your other options.

The best fishing store for quality rods and accessories

In our opinion, Barracuda Marina is the best for high quality rods, reels, lures and tackle. The bloke behind the counter is a really knowledgable fisherman and will be able to give you plenty of advice. From the Japanese reels to custom-made rods, everything in this store is of the highest quality. But with that, comes very high prices. So if you are just getting started, or are a bit short on cash, you may want to look in one of our other recommended stores.

Barracuda Marina is the best fishing shop for high quality equipment.

The cheapest spot to buy your fishing gear

Also in the ‘fishing district’ you’ll find a number of shops to buy very cheap rods and reels. They are not selling established brand names and the equipment doesn’t look like it would last a real long time, but for the ridiculously low prices what they have on offer is amazing value. Some of the stores in this category are Al Fajr Marine & Fishing Equipment, Al Ruban Marine & Fishing Equipment, Al Yaryoor Fishing Accessories and Sea Gate Marine & Fishing Equipment.

Overall best fishing shop

After visiting the ‘fishing district’ we decided to buy our new fishing gear from Al Shahama Marine Equipment. They have recently relocated into a new, larger premises that is well laid out. There is a nice blend of international brands (like Shimano and Ugly Stik) and cheaper imported versions. The staff are also very helpful. In our opinion, this store gives you not only the best range of fishing rods, reels and accessories, but also the best value/quality compromise.

The most convenient place to buy fishing rods and equipment

If the ‘fishing district’ is not near you, Carrefour and ACE Hardware both stock fishing rods and your basic tackle necessities. These are cheap, telescopic rods that won’t last long but you’ll get a few trips out of them. They do however offer rod and reel package deals for very reasonable prices. This is a good option if you just want to pick up something quick to see if you like fishing in Abu Dhabi, before you spend a lot of money.

Online fishing stores in the UAE

In our opinion it is best to touch and feel a rod and reel before buying it. That way you know that it is right for you. But if you already know exactly what you want, there are plenty of online shopping options available. Jighead is online fishing and equipment store based in Dubai that ships to all of the Emirates. They sell all the top quality brands at reasonable prices and have a huge selection of fishing lures. In addition, to the usual online stores, they are worth a look.

The best fishing shop in Dubai

To the best of our knowledge, the largest fishing store in the UAE is in Barracuda Fishing Equipment located on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. They have all the big brands under one roof, so if Dubai is near you, it is definitely worth a look.

Fishing Spots in Abu Dhabi

Ok, so now you have your fishing equipment, you want to know where to fish?

The best fishing is off-shore, but if you don’t have a boat don’t worry there are plenty of charter options and the guides know all the best locations. While you won’t catch a barracuda, shore fishing is still a lot of fun in Abu Dhabi, and there are plenty of options. A little South of town, down the road from Mussafah there is great fishing at Icad II, Hameem Beach and Al Aryam Island. Another great spot is near the Iron Bridge on Yas Island. If you don’t want to drive to far, you can fish at many of the promenades in town including Eastern Mangroves and the Al Raha Beach area. Keep an eye out for other fishermen and you’ll work it out.

Fishing Spots in Dubai

If you are in Dubai, there aren’t as many options for shore fishing. The best fishing location in Dubai is beyond the Jebel Ali Free Zone. Closer to town you can catch smaller fish near the Garhoud Bridge. There are however plenty of fishing charters available from Dubai. Most leave from Dubai Marina and include experienced guides who know where the fish are biting and can provide bait such fresh squid or shrimp.

The Best Time to go Fishing in Abu Dhabi

In Abu Dhabi, you can fish all year round, but you will have more luck in the cooler months (November – February), plus you’ll probably enjoy it more. The best time of day for fishing is early morning.

Don’t forget your fishing license

One last thing. You need a recreational fishing license to fish in Abu Dhabi. If you have an Emirates ID this is simple to get. You can apply online at the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi. It costs 120 AED for an annual license or 30 AED for the weekly option. To activate the annual recreational fishing license you may be required to visit one of the SmartPass kiosks that are scattered around the country – but it is easy enough.

All in all, fishing in Abu Dhabi is a wonderful experience. Not only is it a great pastime to enjoy with the kids but it also allows you to escape from the stresses of work and reconnect with nature.

Happy fishing!
